Oh, who am I kidding? Is nothing sacred nowadays? Dallas was/is one of the biggest/iconic soap opera programmes of all time and it was only a matter of time before some bright spark decided that it needed a 21st century take.
There were plans for a movie years ago but they tanked and TNT, after a received screening of the pilot episode have commissioned a ten episode series, starring most of the original cast - Larry Hagman, Linda Gray and Patrick Duffy in the respective roles of JR Ewing, Sue Ellen Ewing and Bobby Ewing along with Desperate Housewives actors Brenda Strong as Bobby's new wife Ann and both Jesse Metcalfe and Josh Henderson as the sons of Bobby and JR and rivals to boot.
The trailer released for the series (due to air in summer 2012 apparently) definitely seems to show the cheesiness of this version being akin to what has gone before but I can't help but wonder if the magic of Dallas is potent enough to strike twice. Maybe it will but who knows eh? And if this is a success (or even if it fails), what are the odds that new versions of Dynasty and Knot's Landing won't be next?
