GMA-7 Launches Reality TV Series "Buhay Boksingero"

Boxing fans in the Philippines will be treated to a weekly reality television series featuring up and coming boxers fighting in a tournament style format involving five weight categories. In a press conference held at the Cebu City Sports Complex Friday noon, GMA television officially launched Buhay Boksingero to be hosted by Chino Trinidad and former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa.

This novel program is part of the effort to look for the next world boxing champions and the next Manny Pacquiao. The Philippines hotbed of professional boxing, Cebu City, will serve as the initial breeding ground for this endeavour.

Boxing gyms from Cebu like the RWS Gym, C-Mac of Anecito Gesta, SGG stable, Phil-Aust gym, IPI-Omega boxing gym,T.I. Cebu gym, CCSC gym, Tony Jumao-as gym, Bert Batawang gym and the Yanie Sta. Cruz gym.

The boxers will retain their original trainers but will be undergoing a scientific conditioning regimen under Christopher Chappy Callanta. They will be assessed with regards to their deficient areas and as to where they can imrpove. This regimen will be passed on to the various trainers here so our boxers can achieve their peak levels needed to compete abroad.

The boxers will be divided into the 108, 112, 115, 120 and 130 lb categories. They will compete starting in four round fights then six round semi-finals and six round finals. The fights will be supervised by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) and the boxers will receive the standard prize money stipulated for local boxers.

This reality TV program will start on March 13 but the television airing will start on April 24. The boxers will benefit not just from the scientific training but the media exposure. Penalosa thanked the media for their support, Kung walang sports media, walang Gerry Penalosa he said.

These boxers will also gain experience from this program and hopefully we can spot another Penalosa or Pacquiao in the making. The finals will take place in July.
