THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE

THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE

To be screened at Walter Reade Theater
Film Society of Lincoln Center
Friday, April 1, 2011 3:15 PM

THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE is best described as an experience. It is a moody, beautiful, atmospheric film that takes you into the mind of a young girl and, more importantly, into your own mind.

Some beautiful stills from the picture that hint at the film's haunting nature are posted below.

It is also usually regarded as a politically important movie, as well as one of the classic masterpieces of Spanish cinema, It has a rare showing at the
Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center on April 1 at 3:15.

There are many strong and interesting opinions about this film. Some sample articles are listed at the end of this post.

Ana Torrent, the unforgettable star of this film, 5 years old at the time of filming, continues to work as an actress, and has been seen recently in the US as Katherine of Aragon in
THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL, and also in LUNA'S GAME. She has a role in Roland Joffe's THERE BE DRAGONS, which is scheduled for release here in May.

NEW DIRECTORS / NEW FILMS (ND/NF)

40TH ANNUAL
NEW DIRECTORS / NEW FILMS
March 23April 3, 2011

Jeremy Irons
MARGIN CALL

The New Directors / New Films (ND/NF) program at The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and The Film Society of Lincoln Center is always one of the most interesting film programs of the year. The films come from all over the world, and are the work of a new group of filmmakers, here caught at the beginning of their careers. This is the chance to discover the New Filmmakers who will become the Famous and Important Filmmakers of the future.

Take a moment, or more than a moment, on the way to the MOMA theater to stop and view the timeline of ND/NF over the years and meditate on the quality of this event.

Among the special features of this festival is that many of the filmmakers come to present their work, and talk about their work in a Q & A after the film.

Among the directors expected to attend are J.C. Chandor, director of MARGIN CALL, the Opening Night film about power banking, with the power cast of Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci and Jeremy Irons.

Other directors expected to appear with their films are Paddy Considine, director of TYRANNOSAUR, and Maryam Keshavarz, director of CIRCUMSTANCE, the Closing Night film. In fact, nearly every director (except Hongqi Li from China -- WINTER VACATION) is expected to attend.

In addition... Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson and Melissa auf der Maur will join former HOLE bandmate Patty Schemel for the New York debut of the rockumentary HIT SO HARD!

The 40th New Directors/New Films
Feature Film Descriptions

6,7,8 (2010, 100min)
Director: Mohamed Diab
Country: Egypt
Diab's "6,7,8" intersects the stories of three women of very different social and economic status in Cairo as they converge in their collective desire to combat sexual harassment. A wealthy, secular young woman who is molested at football match is revealed to be just as vulnerable as the devout Muslim wife of limited means who must ride the bus with marauding men. Given the cultural and religious implications of family life and gender division, the women look to collective action, the media and even violence as routes to freedom.

AT ELLENS AGE (IM ALTER VON ELLEN) (2010, 95min)
Director: Pia Marais
Country: Germany
Marais AT ELLENS AGE catches a woman at a crossroads following her husbands confession of having an affair and the loss of her job due to a subsequent panic attack. The film follows the womans awakening after she joins forces with a group of animal activists.

ATTENBERG (2010, 95min)
Director: Athina Rachel Tsangari
Country: Greece
Tsangaris ATTENBERG is a fun melding of (new) Nouvelle Vague, musical, melodrama, and nature documentary, symbolically visualizing a change of generation and perspective as a father and daughter gently negotiate their individual rites of passage. The film follows a visionary architect who has come home to die in the vanishing industrial town that is his legacy to his daughter. Meanwhile, his daughter (played by Ariane Labed, in a performance that garnered her the Best Actress award at The Venice Film Festival) is exploring the mysteries of kissing with her girlfriend and the beyond with a visiting engineer.

BELLE EPINE (2010, 80min)
Director: Rebecca Zlotowski
Country: France
Zlotowskis BELLE EPINE is a coming of age story about a teenage girl dealing with the death of her mother and absentee father. The girl loses herself in antisocial behavior, turning away from her Jewish heritage personified by her supportive aunt and uncle, and drawn into the orbit of a wrong-side-of-the-tracks classmate and her biker friends, who gather for chaotic, sometimes lethal night-time motorcycle meets on the edge of town.

THE BLACK POWER MIX TAPE 1967-1975 (2011, 100min)
Director: Gran Hugo Olsson
Country: Sweden
Olssons documentary utilizes never before seen interviews (with Stokely Carmichael and Angela Davis among others) filmed by a group of Swedish filmmakers from the late sixties to mid-seventies to chronicle the growth of the black power movement. Thirty years later this lush collection of 16mm footage was found in a basement - and combined with additional commentary by artists and activists who were influenced by the struggle from Harry Belafonte to Erykah Badu - becomes a powerful chronicle of the birth and life of a movement. THE BLACK POWER MIX TAPE 1967-1975 is a Sundance Selects release.

CIRCUMSTANCE (2011, 107min)
Director: Maryam Keshavarz
Country: France/USA/Iran
Keshavarzs searing feature debut CIRCUMSTANCE follows two young Iranian women as they live life in the shadow of the regime, going to parties and listening to forbidden music while starting to explore their true feelings for each other. CIRCUMSTANCE recently won the Audience Award at the Sundance film festival. CIRCUMSTANCE is a Participant Media and Roadside Attractions release.

COPACABANA (2010, 107min)
Director: Marc Fitoussi
Country: France
Fitoussis second film, COPACABANA is a gentle French comedy about the relationship between a daughter and her single mother, starring real-life mother and daughter Isabelle Huppert and Lotlia Chammah. Embarrassed by her mother, the daughter wants a settled life, something she believes her mother is not capable (nor desiring) of achieving. So her mother sets out to prove her daughter wrong, and win her respect by selling time-shares in a seaside resort town.

CURLING (2010, 96min)
Director: Denis Ct
Country: Canada
Set in the dead of winter, Cts CURLING is a tense and darkly comic portrait of a family in a rural Quebec village. The film follows a single father as he seeks to isolate his adolescent daughter from the outside world for fear that it will scar her as much as it has him. CURLING earned Ct the Silver Leopard for Best Director and Emmanuel Bilodeau the Leopard for Best Actor at the 2010 Locarno Film Festival.

THE DESTINY OF LESSER ANIMALS (2011, 87min)
Director: Deron Albright
Country: Ghana/USA
Albrights drama THE DESTINY OF LESSER ANIMALS follows a Ghanian Police Inspector as he embarks on a dangerous journey through modern Ghana to retrieve his stolen counterfeit passport. Finding his own search linked to a series of violent crimes, he joins forces with a seasoned police veteran who is still optimistic about his country to solve the mystery.

GROMOZEKA (2010, 104min)
Director: Vladimir Kott
Country: Russia
Kotts GROMOZEKA is his follow-up to THE FLY, which was a selection at New Directors/New Films in 2009. The drama follows three men who played in a pop-music trio during their high-school days, and are now three middle-aged men in different walks of lifesurgeon, police officer, taxi driver, living at different levels in Moscows socio-economic structure. Aside from their annual reunions, which book-end the film, their lives intersect only glancingly and unknowingly as their respective personal discontents and professional troubles reach crisis points and presents the contrasting ways in which each of them tries to cope.

HAPPY, HAPPY (SYKT LYKKELIG) (2010, 85min)
Director: Anne Sewitsky
Country: Norway
Switsky's directorial debut, HAPPY HAPPY is a comedy about a thirty-something couple with a young son, living a rather dull life in the Norwegian countryside. Then new neighbors move in next door, and while at first glance they seem to be their mirror image and perfect friend material, the differences that do exist (the new couple's son is an adopted African, the husband is full of sexual energy, and the wife is...Danish!) manifest in increasingly disturbing ways. The film was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

HIT SO HARD (2011, 101min)
Director: P. David Ebersole
Country: USA
Ebersoles rockumentary HIT SO HARD is a pull-no-punches portrait of the hell-and-back life of Patty Schemel, drummer for Courtney Loves band Hole during its peak years. The result is an unprecedented inside look at the one of the Nineties most crucial and controversial groups. Notwithstanding its amazingly candid interviews (Love included), its unflinching accounts of the personal tragedies that plagued the band in its heyday, and a rare look at hardball music-industry politics gives the viewer the lowdown on the recording of Holes 1997 record Celebrity Skin.

HOSPITALIT (2010, 96min)
Director: Koji Fukada
Country: Japan
Set in the confines of downtown Tokyo, Fukadas comedy HOSPITALIT is about a man living a mundane life, running a small printing factory and living a quiet life upstairs with his wife and children. Then a man arrives claiming to be the son of a wealthy financier who once helped his business. Soon the stranger has moved in with HIS wife, is running the business, and soon invites guests of his own a large, eclectic and exotic group into the apartment, destroying the once orderly and comfortable life of his host.

INCENDIES (2010, 130min)
Director: Denis Villeneuve
Country: Canada/France
Villeneuves film, INCENDIES focuses on twins grieving their mothers death who have their world shaken further when the reading of her will reveals that their father, presumed to be deceased, is actually still alive and that they also have a brother. The film follows the twins as they seek to fulfill their mothers final wish for them to find their father and brother and deliver to each of them a sealed letter. A Sony Pictures Classics release.

MAJORITY (OGUNLUK) (2010, 111min)
Director: Seren Yce
Country: Turkey
Yces MAJORITY features Barta Kkaglayan as a man that manages to slide through each day working as an office assistant for his father's construction company when not gobbling burgers at the mall with his buddies. That is until he meets a shy but charming Kurdish girl, and suddenly his entire approach and outlook to life begin to change. However, he now must face a new conflict with his parents...upon whom he is completely dependent, and who won't even consider their son settling down with a Kurd.

MAN WITHOUT A CELL PHONE (BIDOUN MOBILE) (2010, 83min)
Director: Sameh Zoabi
Country: France/Palestine/Israel/Belgium/Qatar
Zoabis feature debut, MAN WITHOUT A CELL PHONE, is a comedy about a young Israeli construction worker with little ambition other than to have fun with his friends and meet girls which is directly at odds with his fathers ambitions to bring down a cell phone tower he is sure is poisoning their Arab neighbors with radiation.

MARGIN CALL (2010, 109min)
Director: J.C. Chandor
Country: USA
Chandor's timely and terrifying dramatic expose, MARGIN CALL tackles twenty-four hours on an investment bank trading floor; a day that brings layer upon layer of human and professional wrongdoing that jeopardizes the entire fabric of the banking system. An all-star ensemble cast, led by Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Zachary Quinto, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci and Jeremy Irons, propel this ominous day toward the abyss, preserving just enough pathos to allow us to ultimately recognize these bankers' humanity.

MEMORY LANE (2010, 98min)
Director: Mikhal Hers
Country: France
Hers MEMORY LANE is a film about characters caught "in between"-between city and country, friendship and love, life and death, and youthful dreams and the impending realities of growing up. Setting in motion several story lines, Hers allows action to develop and characters to emerge through subtle gestures, quick looks and offhand remarks via a splendid ensemble of actors that truly create a sense of closeness, a kind of familiarity that need not be emphasized as it's always so present.

MICROPHONE (2010, 120min)
Director: Amhad Abdalla
Country: Egypt
Abdallas MICROPHONE stars (and is co-produced by) Egyptian heart-throb Khaled Abol Naga as a man who returns to his hometown Alexandria unmoored and restlessly searching for purpose beyond his ex-girlfriend whos no longer interested and his aging father from whom he feels terminally alienated. Wandering the streets he happens upon a music and art making group of younger people that he stubbornly pursues and eventually becomes part of as his self-involvement changes into a real connection with this new world.

OCTUBRE (2010, 93min)
Directors: Daniel and Diego Vega
Country: Peru
Co-directed by brothers Daniel and Diego Vega, OCTUBRE follows a small-time money-lender living in a Lima barrio who one day discovers a baby left on his doorstep. To care for the child--the product of one of his frequent liaisons with prostitutes--the man engages a female neighbor for help, and soon a new, unexpected family is formed. The film won the Jury Prize of the "Un Certain Regard" section of Cannes 2010. OCTUBRE is a New Yorker Films release.

OUTBOUND (PERIFERIC) (2010, 87min)
Director: Bogdan George Apetri
Country: Romania
Apetris OUTBOUND is a tense race against time as a young woman, serving a five-year prison sentence for a crime she didnt commit, attempts to right the wrongs done to her, collect on debts and cleanse herself from her past life after she receives a day pass so that she can attend her mothers funeral.

PARIAH (2011, 86min)
Director: Dee Rees
Country: USA
Executive produced by Spike Lee, Rees debut feature PARIAH, is a character study of a seventeen year-old New Yorker (played by Adepero Oduye) whose efforts to explore her lesbian desires are squarely at odd with her middle-class Brooklyn family and more specifically, her church-going mother (played by Kim Wayans). The film draws an affectionate portrait of a community, one so close everyone knows everyone elses business, and dramatizes the longings, disappointments and achievements of a teenager whose ideas of femininity are less traditional than most. A Focus Features release.

SHUT UP LITTLE MAN! AN AUDIO MISADVENTURE (2011, 85min)
Director: Matthew Bate
Country: Australia
Bates documentary SHUT UP LITTLE MAN! AN AUDIO MISADVENTURE tells the story of two men who, upon discovering they had rented an apartment next to two men who drank and verbally abused each other every night, decided to record the nightly fights and play them back through their neighbors front door. It didnt quiet the noisy roommates, but somehow the recordings became part of an underground culture that still inspire musicians, poets, graphic artists and disc jockeys.

SOME DAYS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS (2010, 93min)
Director: Matt McCormick
Country: USA
McCormicks debut feature SOME DAYS ARE BETTER THAN OTHERS is a poetic character-driven film that asks why the good times slip by so fast while the difficult times seem so sticky. The film follows a trio of stranded characters that seem to be competing for first prize in a Saddest Job in the World contest as McCormick insists on the reality of work, distinctly rebutting the popular image of Portland as a paradise for under-achieving hipsters and the slacker ethos of the unemployed, blissful lifestyle.

SUMMER OF GOLIATH (VERANO DE GOLIAT) (2010, 76min)
Director: Nicols Pereda
Country: Mexico/Canada/Netherlands
Peredas SUMMER OF GOLIATH combines documentary and fiction as it intertwines the stories of people living in a small town in rural Mexico. Those people include: a woman who believes her husband has left her for another woman; her soldier son, who hopes that one day he and his soldier partner will be issued machine guns so that they may intimidate passing motorists; and three brothers whose father left them many years ago in the care of their mother, who can barely support them.

TYRANNOSAUR (2010, 91min)
Director: Paddy Considine
Country: United Kingdom
Actor Considine makes his directorial debut with TYRANNOSAUR, an intense drama about a lonely man with a violent temper and a knack for getting into situations, particularly at pubs, that leave him and others bloody. However, he has a soft spot for a young boy who lives across the street with his feckless mother and her punk boyfriend. Beyond that, he knows better than to seek anyone elses company until he meets a clerk in a church thrift shop who has some problems of her own. TYRANNOSAUR is a Strand Releasing film.

EL VELADOR (2011, 72min)
Director: Natalia Almada
Country: Mexico
Almadas documentary EL VELADOR displays the world of "El Jardin,", a cemetery in the drug heartland of Mexico. Since the war on drugs began in 2007, the cemetery has doubled in size and some of its mausoleums have been built to resemble gaudy cathedrals, creating a skyline that looks like a fantastical surrealist city more than a resting place for the deceased. The film introduces us to both the lives of the cemetery workers and families of the victims - in the shadow of an increasingly bloody conflict that has claimed nearly 35,000 lives.

WINTER VACATION (HAN JIA) (2010, 91min)
Director: Hongqi Li
Country: China
Hongqis WINTER VACATION is a deadpan comedy about four teenagers during the last day of their winter vacation as they face the prospects of having to return to school and their studies. The kids argue, debate and fight as the clock ticks away on their holiday and they deal with their love lives and question school's value and relevance to real life. WINTER VACATION won the Golden Leopard for Best Film at the 2010 Locarno Film Festival.

ANAIS DEMOUSTIER

Anais Demoustier
Shooting Star / Breakthrough Performer at HIFF 2010
In the background: MOMA Curator Rajendra Roy
(He was the Breakthrough Panel Moderator at HIFF)

Coming from Paris, Anais Demoustier was one of the very special Shooting Star/ Breakthrough Performers honored at The Hampton's Film Festival (HIFF 2010) last year.

In person she is charming, sweet, pretty in a very girl-next-door-in-Paris way. In the two films I've seen (SWEET EVIL and LIVING ON LOVE ALONE) she seems to play just that sort of girl -- herself, carefree and friendly -- until you discover that she is NOT!

She has become one of the most sought-after young actresses in France. She has no less than 5 features, 2 TV movies & 2 shorts that came out in 2010 and, so far, 3 more features coming out in 2011.

She was represented at HIFF by SWEET EVIL. In the current Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, she appears in LIVING ON LOVE ALONE - D'AMOUR ET D'EAU FRAICHE

Here's a list of her recent films, with the character she plays and the director:

2011 The Last Winter (post-production) -- Julie -- John Shank
2011 Les pauvres gens (post-production) -- Robert Gudiguian
2011 Sponsoring (post-production) -- Charlotte (also starring Juliette Binoche)
-- Malgorzata Szumowska
2010 Pauline (short) -- Cline Sciamma
2010 Fracture (TV movie) -- Anna Kagan -- Alain Tasma
2010 D'amour et d'eau frache -- Julie Bataille -- Isabelle Czajka (at Rendez-Vous with French Cinema)
2010 Elsewhere -- Jeanne, la routarde -- Frdric Pelle
2010 Belle pine -- Sonia Cohen (Also starring Lea Seydoux) -- Rebecca Zlotowski
2010 George et Fanchette (TV movie) -- Fanchette -- Jean-Daniel Verhaeghe
2010 Dans la jungle des villes (short) -- Julia -- Stphane Demoustier
2010 Monsieur l'abb (short) -- Blandine Lenoir
2010 Sweet Evil -- Celine -- Olivier Coussemacq (at HIFF)

LIVING ON LOVE ALONE - D'AMOUR ET D'EAU FRAICHE

This film, LIVING ON LOVE ALONE - D'AMOUR ET D'EAU FRAICHE, as just about everyone that saw the film remarked (and the film notes also point out), is a perfect example of Godard's famous remark: All you need to make a film is a girl and a gun.

The film seems like a blissfully simple, detailed description of a young girl's increasingly troubled attempt to succeed in social and business situations in which things just keep going a little bit wrong, and then a little bit wronger.

It could be described as: casual living, casual sex, casual cruelty, casual fun, casual relationships, more casual sex, casual misunderstandings, casual work, casual crime.

The film will be shown at RENDEZ-VOUS WITH FRENCH CINEMA 2011

RENDEZ-VOUS WITH FRENCH CINEMA 2011

WHAT LOVE MAY BRING
AN EPIC FILM
THAT EPITOMIZES THE SPIRIT OF THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL!

RENDEZ-VOUS WITH FRENCH CINEMA 2011
MARCH 3-13

This year, the RENDEZ-VOUS WITH FRENCH CINEMA, more than any I can recall for years, is filled with "love;" just what we expect, I guess, from French Cinema. It comes in strange ways in Breillat's version of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale (ultimately reconciled to a modern world) , and in even more over-heated ways Deep in the Woods. Claude Lelouch, in a brilliant epic spanning generations tells many, many love stories all integrated into a history of our times, and our wars, and our music, and our movies.

And there are many more variations on stories of love, this year. Four of the films even have "Love" in the title!

In addition to love, the French excel at stories set in the woods, in rural areas, in castles, and of course at tables, picnics (and other places) set with food.

Many of the French actors and filmmakers, both young newbies and established superstars, will attend their screenings, and there are several special events with extended conversations. Catherine Deneuve, Bertrand Tavernier, Catherine Breillat and Claude Lelouche are among the expected visitors.

SIDNEY POITIER TO BE HONORED WITH CHAPLIN AWARD

THE FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER
Honors Sidney Poitier
At the 38th Annual CHAPLIN AWARD Gala
Monday, May 2, 2011

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will honor Sidney Poitier at the 38th Annual Chaplin Award Gala on the evening of Monday, May 2, 2011.

Ann Tenenbaum, The Film Society of Lincoln Center's Board Chairman said that Sidney Poitier "Has not simply entertained audiences, but has been a part of films that indeed helped change our world for the better. It will be an honor to showcase his amazing body of work."

The Film Society's Annual Gala began in 1972 and honored Charles Chaplin - who returned to the US from exile to accept the commendation. Since then, the award has been renamed for Chaplin, and has honored many of the film industry's most notable talents, including Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Laurence Olivier, Federico Fellini, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, James Stewart, Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and most recently, Michael Douglas.

Born in 1927 in Miami, Florida, Sidney Poitier grew up in the small village of Cat Island, Bahamas. His father, a poor tomato farmer, moved the family to the capital, Nassau, when Poitier was eleven. It was there that he first encountered cinema. Even at a young age, he recognized the ability of cinema to expand one's view of reality. At the age of sixteen, Poitier moved to New York and found a job as a dishwasher. Soon after, he began working as a janitor for the American Negro Theater in exchange for acting lessons.

An actor and director with a career spanning more than five decades in theatre, film, and television, Poitier made his film debut in 1950 with the classic NO WAY OUT. Poitier's films in the fifties, notably CRY, THE BELOVED COUNTRY (1952), BLACKBOARD JUNGLE (1955) and THE DEFIANT ONES (1958), for which Poitier was nominated for an Academy Award, were frequently controversial for the time and often addressed issues of racial equality both home and abroad.

In 1961 Poitier would reprise a role he played on the Broadway stage for the Hollywood adaptation of A RAISIN IN THE SUN. In 1963, Poitier's performance in LILLIES OF THE FIELD, earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor. It marked the first time a black man had been so honored.

Following this success, Poitier's film career continued to be marked by projects that were not shy to hold a mirror up to issues dealing with race. A PATCH OF BLUE (1965), IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT (1967) and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967) addressed black/white conflicts and modern society's evolving thoughts regarding interracial romance as well.

The 1970s began a period in which Poitier made a shift from acting to directing beginning with BUCK AND THE PREACHER (1972), UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT (1974), LET'S DO IT AGAIN (1975), and the classic comedy STIR CRAZY (1980), starring Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor.

After a decade away from acting, Poitier returned to the screen in 1988 for SHOOT TO KILL and LITTLE NIKITA. Poitier also brought his talents to television, notably portraying Thurgood Marshall in "Separate But Equal" (1991) and then Nelson Mandela in the 1997 television docudrama "Mandela and De Klerk."

RUSSELLMANIA

RUSSELLMANIA
Featuring the Brit bad-boy himself, in person at all evening screenings
July 30-August 5, 2010

Ken Russell in 1975

Regarded as British cinema's greatest enfant terrible, Ken Russell is also an English national treasure. Russell created an intensely imaginative visual language to tell his stories-employing a style that is as poetic as it is ferocious.

(Note Aug 4: See the exclusive classic (1975) interview with Ken Russell on tattoowesley, above.)

In the 1960s and 70s Russell trashed the staid conventions of cinematic good taste, forging a subversive cinema of outrageous excess and mischievous iconoclasm. At a time when the British film industry was all but moribund, this fearlessly controversial and flamboyant writer-director pulled off an unmatched nine-film winning streak, which we present for your delectation.

"The Film Society prides itself on bringing world class filmmakers to our audiences for live, in-depth conversations, so we are thrilled that Ken Russell will join us for every night of this series," says Mara Manus, Executive Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center.

No stranger to controversy, Russell often focused his work on scandalous portrayals of the lives of other great artists, including Mahler, Liszt, and Tchaikovsky. Russell's film adaptations of literature were no less outrageous; The Devils (adapted from Aldous Huxley's The Devils of Loudun) caused a sensation due to its violence, frank sexuality, and controversial religious imagery and was consequently banned in several countries and heavily edited in others.

"
Ken Russell is one of those rare artists whose work consistently bridged--and sometimes confounded--the gap between "art cinema" and "commercial cinema," says Richard Pea, Program Director, The Film Society of Lincoln Center. "His works were both extremely personal and accessible to a wide range of international audiences, and this is a terrific opportunity to discover his very special vision of life, love, art and politics."

Join The Film Society of Lincoln Center (FilmLinc) for six personal audiences with the legendary Ken Russell, British Cinema's madcap visionary maverick, in person at all evening screenings.

Special thanks from FilmLinc to Shade Rupe.

OPEN ROADS: NEW ITALIAN CINEMA

OPEN ROADS:
New Italian Cinema

June 3-10, 2010

The highly anticipated series returns for its 10th Anniversary
Showcasing the latest in Italian Cinema!
Acclaimed Directors Carlo Verdone, Paolo Virz, and more in person!

With this series, The Film Society of Lincoln Center continues its important programming of major Italian films. (A very interesting cover story on Italian cinema in the May 2010 issue of Sight & Sound includes an interview with Tilda Swinton from I Am Love, an article, Maetros and Mobsters that features Vincere, and Gomorrah, and other movies, all films that have played recently at Lincoln Center.)

Among the fine actors in the Opening Night Film. The Man Who Will Come, is Alba Rohrwacher. (Note: I'll not review this film here, because the less you know about this powerful film going in, the more interesting it will be: It has its own deliberate -- and deliberately somewhat murky -- story-telling style.) Alba was one of last year's "Shooting Stars" honored at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival, and then in the US at the Hamptons International Film Festival, where I met her. She is a charming, not-imposing, friendly young woman. On screen, she is profoundly normal, until she reacts with formidable, but completely natural, ferocity. Her credits are impressive, having appeared in I Am Love with Tilda Swinton, Due Partite (The Ladies Get Their Say) which was shown at the Hamptons, and The Man Who Will Come, here in Open Roads. She will soon be seen with Isabella Rosselini in Saverio Costanzo's The Solitude of Prime Numbers.

Here's the Film Society description of the series:

The Film Society of Lincoln Center will showcase the best in contemporary Italian film with the tenth edition of its annual fan-favorite, Open Roads: New Italian Cinema series, screening at the Walter Reade Theater from June 3rd through June 10th, 2010.

One of the tentpoles of The Film Society's calendar, Open Roads: New Italian Cinema has shepherded in the Summer film going season since 2001 as well as brought new Italian cinema to the forefront of international film - and this year's sterling selection is no exception.

The 2010 edition of Open Roads: New Italian Cinema offers an especially strong slate-another powerful indication of the growing vitality of recent Italian cinema in a year that has seen the release of Vincere, Mid-August Lunch, and soon I Am Love (New Directors/New Films 2010). This new generation of filmmakers continues to open up and explore areas of Italian life and culture, telling fresh stories in surprising ways.

Oscar-winning director, Giuseppe Tornatore (Cinema Paradiso) returns with Baaria. Set in his hometown of Bagheria, Tornatore's saga spans decades in the lives of a multitude of characters, yet remains one of his most personal films to date.

Another alum of the series, Giorgio Diritti, offers the moving wartime drama The Man Who Will Come, his follow-up to The Wind Blows Round (Open Roads 2006).

The series also features the work of first time directors Susanna Nicchiarelli (Cosmonauta) and Valerio Mieli (Ten Winters), as well as celebrated actor John Turturro's Rehearsal for a Sicilian Tragedy (co-directed with Roman Paska).

Many of the films in this year's selection come to New York audiences after having won awards and accolades at festivals around the world, including Francesca Comencini's The White Space (Best Actress, Venice), Alessandro Angelini's Raise Your Head (Best Actor, Rome), and Pietro Marcello's The Mouth of the Wolf (Best Film, Turin/Caligari Film Prize, Berlin).

Directors in attendance this year include Diritti, Nicchiarelli, Mieli, Comencini, Angelini, as well as Alessandro Aronadio (One Life Maybe Two), Carlo Verdone (Me, Them and Lara) Paolo Virz (The First Beautiful Thing) with more confirming.

On Wednesday, June 9, The World According to...Bruno Bozzetto! offers a special program of works by the acclaimed animation artist, including his critically beloved Allegro non troppo and a collection of shorts.

BAARIA

Baaria
Giuseppe Tornatore, 2009, Italy; 150m
After La Sconosciuta (The Unknown Woman), the Oscar-winning director of Cinema Paradiso returns to Open Roads with his most personal film, set in his hometown Bagheria, just outside of Palermo. This Sicilian saga spans several decades with a multitude of characters, and involves politics, sex, poverty, dreams, and, of course, cinema. With newcomers Francesco Scianna and Margareth Mad, who recently played the role of Sophia Loren in a TV movie.

Basilicata Coast to Coast
Rocco Papaleo, Italy, 2009; 105m
Four musicians (Paolo Briguglia, Alessandro Gassman, Max Gazze and Rocco Papaleo) set out on foot to the Theatre-Song Festival of Scanzano Jonico, traversing the Basilicata Region from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian Sea. Giovanna Mezzogiorno (Vincere) shines as the reluctant journalist assigned to chronicle their back-to-basics journey. Actor Rocco Papaleo's directorial debut is a gently comic slice-of-life glimpse into the southern Italian region from which he hails. Papaleo also wrote most of the music, a delightful mix of jazz, swing and funny spoken word. Fri Jun 4: 4:30
Tue Jun 8: 6:15

Cosmonauta
Susanna Nicchiarelli, 2010, Italy; 85m
Refusing her first Communion, nine-year-old Luciana declares she's a Communist and atheist-an announcement cheered only by her older brother and fellow Communist Arturo. The two like nothing more than following the progress of Soviet cosmonauts, but as Luciana grows older, she starts to change-while Arturo decidedly doesn't. A lovely, impressive first film about learning to leave the past behind.

THE DOUBLE HOUR

The Double Hour (La doppia ora)
Giuseppe Capotondi, 2009, Italy; 95m
Filippo Timi (star of Vincere) and Ksenia Rappoport both won acting awards for their work in this remarkable, ever-changing thriller. She's a maid, he's an ex-cop; they meet via a speed-dating service, and for a while their relationship has real promise. But then a murder happens, and nothing is ever again what it seemed to be.

Nine-year-old Bruno cringes when his mother is crowned beauty queen in a seedy Livorno bath house. Years later Bruno (Valerio Mastandrea) has as little contact with his family as possible-until he gets a message that his mother wants to see him one last time. So Ezio writes himself into the story-a development his characters welcome, as they've got some ideas of their own. Echoes of Pirandello, Wes Anderson, and Woody Allen run through this delightful, provocative comedy, a welcome return to the genre for Salvatores (Mediterraneo, Marrakech Express).

KISS ME AGAIN

Kiss Me Again (Baciami ancora)
Gabriele Muccino, 2010, Italy; 139m
Almost ten years after One Last Kiss (2001), the thirty-somethings from that movie are now in their forties, married but no more mature-and growing restless. Director Gabriele Muccino carefully brings together an amazing number of stories and characters, charting their love lives, family relations, friendships and betrayals, creating no less than a beautifully detailed mosaic of a generation. Featuring many of Italy's finest actors: Stefano Accorsi, Pierfrancesco Favino, Vittoria Puccini, Claudio Santamaria, and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi.

Italy, 1944. For eight-year-old Martina, after her newborn brother passes away, death can never be far from her family and the farming community in which they live. But it arrives in an unexpected form: German troops, occupying Italy after Mussolini's demise. Based on actual historical events, the second film by Giorgio Diritti (The Wind Blows Round, Open Roads 2006) reveals a chapter of wartime history until now rarely discussed or depicted on screen. One of the most powerful films of the year.
