TWITTER, RAIN, & SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK

It turns out that the best way to find out whether Shakespeare in the Park in New York is cancelled because of rain may be to check their Twitter feed. They do not seem to post the information on their web site, but did post it in a fairly timely fashion on Twitter:

By the way...

They generally ("never" ?) cancel a performance because of rain before 8:00. They may even hold out for an extra half hour or so in the hope the rain will clear up. (That has actually happened to me twice in the last few years... rain stopped or delayed a performance and then clearing allowed the play to go on.)


This year they are performing ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL (a good performance I saw recently) and MEASURE FOR MEASURE.

And... Plan ahead: Coming to the Public Theater in the fall (not in the park) is Sam Waterston in KING LEAR!

TWITTER DOWN

Even the whale seems to have gone down.

There's no access to Twitter now (6:20 PM April 29). Reports are that it went down about 6 AM. That's 12 hours down and counting.

Some reports suggest a Denial of Service attack. Perhaps it was compounded with excessive wedding chatter.

Hopefully it is not related to any kind of security breach, although unlike certain other sites that have been shut down, Twitter probably has little very sensitive financial information about its users (although there is a wealth of data mining info it probably has stored someplace).


NOTE (6:27): Well, it's just about five minutes later and the whale has surfaced. So now it's just (just ???) overcapacity.

NOTE: (6:33): Well, now Twitter's back running again, for me. I can see a hand-full of posts going back an hour. So it probably has been coming back slowly and spottily for a while.

We're trying out PAPER.LI'S Twitter consolidation page. It accumulates all the tweets you select that link to full articles, and formats them in a newspaper-style page.

I first discovered this site in The Ensemble Studio Theater's tweets. Thy've put together a very interesting daily collection of theater news:

Some notes about paper.li :

• It has very primitive selection criteria. You make some basic choices and for everything in your scope it accumulates everything that has a link. Then it formats a page.
• You can set the frequency of publication: Daily; Morning & evening; or Weekly.
• You have little or no ability to customize the resulting page.
• I don't know whether it checks links for viruses. Use at your own risk. (I'm using only sites that I hope are trustworthy as sources -- but still it is a little risky. Use at your own risk!)
• Given improvements and enhancements in the site, it seems like the best way yet to view the scope of twitter information.
• The site is still in alpha!
• They are pre-alpha in developing an accumulation page for Facebook.
• The company is based in Switzerland.
